00:02:53.200 --> 00:02:55.849
The past month, we've been bouncing around across the country.
00:02:55.849 --> 00:03:04.811
We went from Gary Gilmore, the 2016 College World Series champion, coastal Carolina head coach, to Brian Warning in Ohio.
00:03:04.811 --> 00:03:07.969
And now today, get out your hand warmers.
00:03:07.969 --> 00:03:09.224
We're going to South Dakota.
00:03:09.224 --> 00:03:22.373
The state champion head coach at Brandon Valley High School in South Dakota, and he also is the head coach of Legion Post 131, head coach Jeremy Van Heel.
00:03:22.373 --> 00:03:25.981
Coach, thanks for taking time to be on baseball coaches unplugged oh you bet.
00:03:25.981 --> 00:03:26.844
Thanks for having me.
00:03:26.844 --> 00:03:27.526
I'm excited.
00:03:27.526 --> 00:03:30.455
Well, I, I gotta start off.
00:03:30.455 --> 00:03:31.639
You want to stay?
00:03:31.639 --> 00:03:34.123
Title congratulations oh thank you.
00:03:34.183 --> 00:03:37.431
Yeah, it was, uh, it's been, it was a good ride.
00:03:37.431 --> 00:03:38.332
I mean it was fun.
00:03:38.332 --> 00:03:42.346
Um, luckily, this I mean this is my second one here in Brandon.
00:03:42.346 --> 00:03:47.275
We had one in 2017, and then we had one this year.
00:03:47.275 --> 00:03:49.769
So it's been a little bit, but it was fun.
00:03:49.769 --> 00:03:56.109
I mean it was one of those things as a coach I mean, especially with high school kids where all of the pieces kind of line up.
00:03:56.109 --> 00:03:57.947
We knew we had a really good team.
00:03:57.947 --> 00:04:13.283
We had a lot of kids last year that were young, they were sophomores that played up, and then this year we had three senior pitchers that were going to go play college baseball, and then we had all these kids that had experience and we had our ups and downs throughout the year.
00:04:13.283 --> 00:04:18.189
But I mean we got hot and 11 games in a row at the end of the year to win it.
00:04:18.189 --> 00:04:19.012
So it was kind of fun.
00:04:19.959 --> 00:04:30.120
So was there like a defining moment during the season where you're like, wow, this, this team is special and will kind of set you apart from the competition?
00:04:32.084 --> 00:04:33.889
We knew I mean I hate to say it some of those things.
00:04:33.889 --> 00:04:43.334
Like we knew we had the pieces and it was just as a coaching staff finding ways to implement, I mean to get them prepared.
00:04:43.334 --> 00:04:48.711
I mean our biggest downfall was, I mean, the eight inches here between the head.
00:04:48.711 --> 00:05:02.149
I mean, if we could figure that part out, we are good Because when we played, when we were winning, we played fast, but then all of a sudden we would just take the foot off the throttle a little bit and all of a sudden we just made some dumb mistakes.
00:05:02.149 --> 00:05:08.548
So I mean we kind of just got together and we looked at the guys and I mean it was just one of those conversations I had with them.
00:05:08.548 --> 00:05:17.033
I'm like, guys, I don't care what happens here the rest of the year, but my fear for you is not that we lose and don't make state or don't win state.
00:05:17.033 --> 00:05:22.166
My biggest fear is that you don't understand the potential you have and how great you can be.
00:05:22.166 --> 00:05:28.475
And then from that moment we kind of just came together and one of our things, I mean pressure's a privilege.
00:05:28.475 --> 00:05:35.180
I mean, brandon, we've been making it to the Final Four State Championship and getting there numerous times.
00:05:35.180 --> 00:05:38.029
So like this is something that just doesn't just happen.
00:05:38.029 --> 00:05:40.427
I mean, we work and do the right things to get there.
00:05:41.461 --> 00:05:47.322
But we kind of went with a model of one of the kids at practice one day said who's going to carry the boats?
00:05:47.322 --> 00:05:57.843
I mean David Goggins saying, and I was like I looked at him and I said it's not really who's going to carry it, man, it's like let's just burn the boats, so we have nowhere else to go, was it?
00:05:57.843 --> 00:06:01.949
Hernan Cortez, a Spanish explorer used to do that with his guys.
00:06:01.949 --> 00:06:06.764
He'd pull up and burn them and he's like hey, guys, we have nowhere to go, so let's just do this.
00:06:06.764 --> 00:06:13.692
So I brought that to them and I'm like let's burn the boats and let's see what happens, don't back down.
00:06:13.692 --> 00:06:16.788
And the guys stepped up to the challenge and we went.
00:06:16.788 --> 00:06:17.630
It was fun.
00:06:18.821 --> 00:06:20.687
Well, high school baseball in South Dakota.
00:06:20.687 --> 00:06:23.749
I'm here in Ohio.
00:06:23.749 --> 00:06:29.682
I've never been to that part of the country.
00:06:29.682 --> 00:06:37.480
Kind of walk us through how the season is set up and what makes coaching unique compared to other parts of the country.
00:06:37.922 --> 00:06:53.473
I mean I'm a member of the ABCA, so we go there, like I'll go to those meetings and watch guys and they talk about practices and practice plans, and you know, I mean we're there's some years that we don't get outside until middle of April, if not even May.
00:06:53.473 --> 00:06:55.023
Like it's one of those things.
00:06:55.023 --> 00:06:57.670
You're just at the hand of nature.
00:06:57.670 --> 00:07:03.971
So like we we don't have contact hours here because we're it's high school baseball is not sanctioned.
00:07:03.971 --> 00:07:12.608
We're affiliated though, so we follow some of the rules of the high school but, um, we don't have to like go through like the contact hour stuff, um.
00:07:12.608 --> 00:07:25.134
So here at brandon we do winter workouts through january and february inside, um, and then we start baseball, like after february, march, uh, we do indoor practices, um, we then take a trip down to kansas.
00:07:25.134 --> 00:07:29.009
Uh, we go to lawrence kansas and play five, six games, that kind of just.
00:07:29.009 --> 00:07:30.536
I mean, and that's usually.
00:07:30.536 --> 00:07:37.802
We get there and the guys are like we hit as many fly balls as we can, because it's like we haven't been outside and they're the teams.
00:07:37.802 --> 00:07:48.733
They're like we're 10, 12, 13 games deep and we're like it just is nice to see a ball in the air, not in indoor lights, um, and then we come back and I mean we kind of have free reign.
00:07:48.733 --> 00:07:50.146
We do PowerPoints and stuff.
00:07:50.560 --> 00:07:52.708
I know we try to schedule the teams throughout the state.
00:07:52.708 --> 00:07:55.029
We have A and B.
00:07:55.029 --> 00:07:56.879
In South Dakota is kind of how it goes.
00:07:56.879 --> 00:08:00.730
There's 16 A teams and then there's a bunch of B teams.
00:08:00.730 --> 00:08:07.882
So for A we just do PowerPoint system and then it's you break it down one through 16.
00:08:08.944 --> 00:08:21.908
The top eight teams get a chance to host a super regional and then if you win your best of three super regional, you go to the state tournament, as you can see behind me, which is an eight team tournament, a single game elimination.
00:08:21.908 --> 00:08:26.940
So it's soon as you get there, a single game elimination.
00:08:26.940 --> 00:08:27.622
So it's soon as you get there.
00:08:27.622 --> 00:08:28.605
I mean it's you kind of have to win three games.
00:08:28.605 --> 00:08:33.841
So I like to schedule our season where you play a double header and so we teach our guys again.
00:08:33.841 --> 00:08:46.666
We got to win two games because realistically, the super regionals, you win two games, you make it the state and then, if you make it the state, you win your Friday game and then to win the state title you have to win two games on Saturday.
00:08:46.666 --> 00:08:52.544
So trying to be able to win two games in a row without losing is it's kind of key.
00:08:54.129 --> 00:08:59.041
I like how you plan your your, your schedule out to prepare you for that.
00:08:59.041 --> 00:09:09.534
And that's the great thing about coaching is you know, when coaches aren't looking at just hey, this game, they're looking at that final game.
00:09:09.534 --> 00:09:12.246
Yep, that's why you're as successful as you are.
00:09:13.061 --> 00:09:14.082
And I mean it's kind of fun.
00:09:14.082 --> 00:09:20.955
I mean we actually, since we're not with the school, we have a chance to kind of do our schedule however we want.
00:09:20.955 --> 00:09:23.245
So you can kind of pick it.
00:09:23.245 --> 00:09:25.431
Some teams go lighter, some teams go heavier.
00:09:26.340 --> 00:09:43.990
I try to schedule usually every Tuesday is a doubleheader versus a class A team, that's PowerPoints, and then maybe like a Saturday as well, and then I'll sprinkle in some games on maybe Thursday or Fridays that are not even like PowerPoint related.
00:09:43.990 --> 00:09:48.347
So we'll play teams from Fargo, we'll play B schools and stuff like that.
00:09:48.347 --> 00:09:55.828
So I mean we can kind of get a lot of opportunities and reps because again, like this year, we actually had a good, a good spring.
00:09:55.828 --> 00:09:57.427
We were able to get outside.
00:09:57.427 --> 00:10:09.631
But the year before we got outside, the last week of March, we practiced and then all of a sudden we were hit with a snowstorm and we had feet of snow for three weeks and then it just was.
00:10:09.631 --> 00:10:13.785
You were at the mercy of all right, like what are we going to do?
00:10:13.785 --> 00:10:17.941
And we're out shoveling snow off the turf and trying to get to play.
00:10:18.522 --> 00:10:20.865
So Wow, incredible.
00:10:20.865 --> 00:10:29.916
I mean, you know Ohio, we've we've had days where you know it snows and stuff like that, but definitely not to that extent, that's for sure.
00:10:29.916 --> 00:10:35.442
Well, when you get into that championship game, you make it to the Final Four there.
00:10:35.442 --> 00:10:40.716
What, um, what is your message to the guys?
00:10:40.716 --> 00:10:45.657
You know you take me inside the dugout and to get them prepared for that that game.
00:10:46.664 --> 00:10:50.572
Well, um, you mean to get to the championship game?
00:10:50.572 --> 00:10:53.418
It actually the kids were locked.
00:10:53.418 --> 00:10:59.538
I mean, our biggest hurdle was, um, our first game we played was Sioux Falls O'Gorman.
00:10:59.538 --> 00:11:04.037
It was the semifinals, uhinals or the quarterfinal game.
00:11:04.037 --> 00:11:06.753
We went out there we were throwing our pitcher.
00:11:06.904 --> 00:11:08.171
We have a kid, aiden Zerf.
00:11:08.171 --> 00:11:16.090
He's going to Notre Dame, he's pitched for me for four years and I mean he's a complete pitcher, like he's been our guy.
00:11:16.090 --> 00:11:27.716
We had him on limited pitching throughout the year so he was rested, like he was good to go when a lot of other teams' top arms they were tired.
00:11:27.716 --> 00:11:29.610
No, aiden was ready to throw.
00:11:29.610 --> 00:11:32.691
We went out there and he struggled game one.
00:11:33.634 --> 00:11:39.476
The first couple innings we were losing 6-0 after three innings in this game.
00:11:39.476 --> 00:11:48.504
It was one of those moments where I mean, as a high school player, it's like, oh man, we made it and just shut down.
00:11:48.504 --> 00:11:57.625
But no, and he kind of started, he set the tone and he kind of rebooted and we had a conversation about we know, that's not you Like.
00:11:57.625 --> 00:12:00.184
Those walks and those runs are not you Like.
00:12:00.184 --> 00:12:03.469
That's not who you are, go out the way you can.
00:12:03.469 --> 00:12:09.775
And he went and pitched a great game, ended up going pitch count through the next, all the way to the sixth inning.
00:12:09.816 --> 00:12:28.467
So it was huge, but we went to the bottom or no, it was the top of the seventh inning and we were down seven runs and we proceeded to just go and we scored and we ended up winning, as the final score of that game was uh, what was it?
00:12:28.467 --> 00:12:30.150
Uh, 10 to 6.
00:12:30.150 --> 00:12:35.278
Um, so we, we, it was fun and we did it with him.
00:12:35.278 --> 00:12:37.908
I mean, he started it, uh, that aiden zur.
00:12:37.908 --> 00:12:54.496
Again, we had bases loaded, he fouled off some pitches and got a walk and then the next guy hit a double and we had a guy dive into first base to not get out, I mean infield hit, and it just was one of those innings that you could put it together and you're like wow.
00:12:55.085 --> 00:12:58.172
Like we did not quit, we believed in the hard 90.
00:12:58.172 --> 00:12:59.345
We believed in each other.
00:12:59.345 --> 00:13:07.754
We burned the boats, I mean after we were down six, like we were not going back and the guys just continued to push.
00:13:07.754 --> 00:13:22.493
Um, so after we won that game, I mean with this big comeback, um, the next game, we I mean the guys were just super confident Um, we got down again by a couple of runs late and it was the fifth inning.
00:13:22.493 --> 00:13:26.511
We were down two and then all of a sudden we came back and scored a big inning again to take the lead and just shut it down.
00:13:26.511 --> 00:13:39.691
And then when we got to the championship, it was back and forth the first couple innings, but it was always one run, one run and then we just went off and you could just see the guys were not going to stop.
00:13:39.691 --> 00:13:42.110
I mean it was finish on empty.
00:13:42.491 --> 00:13:53.828
That mentality, well you know this is something I've wondered about, you know, when I was looking at some of the info about you on the internet.
00:13:53.828 --> 00:13:57.876
And you also coach Legion Baseball.
00:13:57.876 --> 00:14:06.778
Yep, yep, a lot of coaches here in Ohioio don't, uh, necessarily coach summer baseball.
00:14:06.778 --> 00:14:23.558
It's primarily travel baseball here and uh, there is some legion, but, um, but coaches typically, unless they got a kid playing, their son playing, they typically don't really get involved a whole lot in the summer game.
00:14:23.558 --> 00:14:29.418
Is that some sort of expectation of you as the coach to coach that Legion team?
00:14:29.418 --> 00:14:30.865
I?
00:14:30.885 --> 00:14:31.888
mean I think this is.
00:14:31.888 --> 00:14:39.657
I mean here in South Dakota there's a lot of quality coaches, but I think at a lot of programs it's still hard to find some coaches.
00:14:39.657 --> 00:14:53.413
So you'll see that with a lot of programs where the high school head coach will be the Legion coach or they'll be the high school coach and coach the junior Legion and they kind of bounce back and forth.
00:14:53.413 --> 00:15:00.714
I mean I know, like my assistant he does it with me, he helps use my assistant for high school assistant for summer.
00:15:00.714 --> 00:15:10.730
My JL coach and JV coach does both, because again, I think some of that is we don't have those contact hour stipulations and things like that.
00:15:10.730 --> 00:15:14.475
So it's kind of easier just to kind of flow.
00:15:14.475 --> 00:15:21.009
I mean we end our high school and then we have like a week off and then we just go right into Legion for two months.
00:15:21.009 --> 00:15:23.255
Yeah.
00:15:23.784 --> 00:15:30.078
Is there a different style or approach to coaching the Legion guys versus how you do your high school?
00:15:30.926 --> 00:15:33.413
I mean I it's with the travel ball stuff.
00:15:33.413 --> 00:15:34.316
It has changed.
00:15:34.316 --> 00:15:37.030
I mean it's not we, I mean we're a community.
00:15:37.030 --> 00:15:53.784
So, like our team is our team, and then in the summertime, legion, some, some of the teams, like here in Sioux Falls, they go from having five high school teams to just two Legion teams and then, like Rapid City, they have two high schools and then they have two Legion teams.
00:15:53.784 --> 00:15:58.136
So again it's all program based and city based, based upon numbers.
00:15:58.136 --> 00:16:03.472
But I mean we're all community, so it's our guys, we go.
00:16:03.804 --> 00:16:06.514
But we're starting to see some travel ball stuff where kids are.
00:16:06.514 --> 00:16:13.150
I mean my state tournament team, our final, our final roster, there's 10 that we had playing.
00:16:13.150 --> 00:16:32.794
We had seven of those guys go do something different this summer, which if it was just going to a collegiate league playing some sort of like amateur ball around here, going to do some travel ball associations with somebody else, or I mean they were focusing on football.
00:16:32.794 --> 00:16:34.547
I mean.
00:16:34.547 --> 00:16:37.696
So it was kind of unique this year where we had that.
00:16:37.696 --> 00:16:42.570
In the past we maybe only had maybe one or two kids that actually didn't play.
00:16:43.110 --> 00:16:47.635
So I don't know, things are changing, but I think Legion baseball is still.
00:16:47.635 --> 00:16:51.099
There's that part of you're playing for your community.
00:16:51.099 --> 00:16:53.162
You're playing for the name on the front.
00:16:53.162 --> 00:16:58.647
Nothing against it.
00:16:58.647 --> 00:17:04.012
I think baseball is unique in the way that it there's opportunities for everybody to play.
00:17:04.012 --> 00:17:06.172
There's no excuse to not get better.
00:17:06.172 --> 00:17:12.674
If you want to play collegiate or go play somewhere like, there's always a place for you or a coach that will work for you.
00:17:12.674 --> 00:17:21.871
But for me I like high school because again, you're playing for your high school team and then Legion, you're playing for your community, which is kind of fun.
00:17:23.705 --> 00:17:26.250
Being a coach that coaches both spring and summer.
00:17:26.250 --> 00:17:37.660
With all the crazy stories that you see just flooding the internet, what is your message to parents about their kids' journey?
00:17:37.660 --> 00:17:41.236
And it's not the parents' journey, it's the kids'.
00:17:42.065 --> 00:17:43.769
Oh, I mean that is.
00:17:43.769 --> 00:17:47.086
I mean that is a good, very good question.
00:17:47.086 --> 00:17:50.354
Um, I wish I had a great answer.
00:17:50.354 --> 00:17:55.028
Um, I mean, but it is kind of like you said, it's the kid's journey.
00:17:55.028 --> 00:18:05.070
Um, I mean it is hard when all of a sudden, like a player would want to go do travel ball or maybe doesn't want to do travel ball or focuses on football.
00:18:05.070 --> 00:18:11.034
I mean, as a coach, you just kind of got to be there and say, hey, I mean what's right for you?
00:18:11.034 --> 00:18:14.445
I mean I have your back, I can help you any way I possibly can.
00:18:14.445 --> 00:18:15.969
I can communicate to colleges.
00:18:15.969 --> 00:18:24.164
Still, if you're with somebody else, I mean since I've been your coach, but yeah, yeah, I mean everybody's journey is a little different.
00:18:24.665 --> 00:18:32.946
Um, and I think, with having these opportunities, I mean one thing I've noticed is depth of teams has changed.
00:18:32.946 --> 00:18:37.695
Um, you're, you're seeing parents, I think more likely.
00:18:37.695 --> 00:18:47.719
Um, I mean, when we were in high school, like we focused on know your role, do do your role, like understand, be great at your role that day, because it could change any moment.
00:18:47.719 --> 00:18:57.836
But then when all of a sudden, high school, you're tied to your school and then you go to summer and you're not tied, well, those guys that were role players, that were the backup.
00:18:57.836 --> 00:19:02.076
Shortstop or I mean the relief pitcher, well, I don't, or maybe it's the parent, I don't want them to be the backup.
00:19:02.076 --> 00:19:04.532
Shortstop or I mean the relief pitcher, well, I don't, or maybe it's the parent, I don't want them to be the backup.
00:19:04.532 --> 00:19:06.912
What opportunity can you do?
00:19:06.912 --> 00:19:13.088
I think that is the part you're kind of speaking at and I kind of went around.
00:19:13.088 --> 00:19:25.939
Is I mean you kind of just have to let them go and figure out, I guess, what is best for you If it is learning the toughness of competing for a spot or if it is being the everyday guy.
00:19:27.286 --> 00:19:35.200
I know I've had some kids that went and played travel ball and we had colleges show up at our games asking about them.
00:19:35.200 --> 00:19:38.545
It's the same schools that would have saw them at travel ball.
00:19:38.545 --> 00:19:42.607
So I don't, I mean I don't know, I guess it's your journey, is your journey.
00:19:42.607 --> 00:19:51.627
We've had kids that went travel ball and got seen by big schools, but then again we had name drop Aiden.
00:19:51.627 --> 00:19:54.093
Again, he played Legion baseball.
00:19:54.093 --> 00:20:04.398
He played high school baseball, didn't do PBR, didn't do any of that, and he just wanted to go to Notre Dame and just gritted it out.
00:20:04.398 --> 00:20:09.416
I mean it was sending messages, contacting the coach, like and just staying on him.
00:20:09.416 --> 00:20:11.028
Hey, here's my last outing.
00:20:11.028 --> 00:20:12.673
Hey, here's my rap soda report.
00:20:12.673 --> 00:20:14.538
Hey, here's me playing basketball.
00:20:14.538 --> 00:20:15.748
I mean.
00:20:15.748 --> 00:20:20.164
So I think again, control your own journey and you can get to where you want.
00:20:20.265 --> 00:20:21.728
Control your own journey and you can get to where you want.
00:20:21.728 --> 00:20:23.510
Yes, and you know, the great message is there.
00:20:23.510 --> 00:20:28.479
You don't have to spend thousands of dollars to join a travel team.
00:20:28.479 --> 00:20:34.278
And everybody talks about exposure and all those things.
00:20:34.278 --> 00:20:34.804
You're in South Dakota.
00:20:34.804 --> 00:20:42.263
Yeah, I mean there's probably more treetops than there are rooftops, you know, and so I'm.
00:20:42.263 --> 00:20:44.749
I mean it's great to hear that.
00:20:44.749 --> 00:20:49.097
You know, if you've got talent, they will find you.
00:20:49.419 --> 00:20:51.267
Yeah, then I think it's again.
00:20:51.267 --> 00:20:53.070
It's nowadays with social media.
00:20:53.070 --> 00:20:58.058
Kids just have to understand you got to put yourself out there.
00:20:58.058 --> 00:21:06.392
And I mean again, if it's parents that are really interested in trying to get their kids somewhere, well then help your kid, teach them how to get their name out there.
00:21:06.392 --> 00:21:08.087
I mean contact coaches.
00:21:08.087 --> 00:21:11.275
I mean you may have to go to a school's prospect camp.
00:21:11.275 --> 00:21:15.673
You may have to travel somewhere like that and be like hey, I really want to go to school here.
00:21:15.673 --> 00:21:20.513
I'm going to go show you and here's my stuff, what do you like?
00:21:22.479 --> 00:21:24.825
Well, do you hate losing or love winning?
00:21:27.636 --> 00:21:29.444
Do you hate losing or love winning?
00:21:29.444 --> 00:21:31.851
Oh man, that is a tough question.
00:21:31.851 --> 00:21:33.655
I mean the scoreboard's always on.
00:21:33.655 --> 00:21:39.516
If the scoreboard's on, we want to have more ours than the other team.
00:21:39.516 --> 00:21:40.845
I mean it's one of those things we want to do that.
00:21:41.105 --> 00:21:49.016
But I am a firm believer in a well-timed loss is very meaningful.
00:21:49.016 --> 00:21:54.227
I mean success is about the journey, not the destination.
00:21:54.227 --> 00:21:56.691
I mean you got to find a way.
00:21:56.691 --> 00:22:08.317
Again, we were a seven seed Let me say that again no six seed in high school and we won um this in our legion season, harrisburg.
00:22:08.317 --> 00:22:11.073
They won the state title and moved on to the Midwest regional.
