If you’re banking on raw talent to carry you, this conversation will feel like a wake-up call. We break down the real separator in high school baseball—consistency—and show how it outperforms flash, hype, and one big showcase swing. From running out grounders during a slump to throwing intent-filled bullpens when no one’s filming, we draw a straight line between boring, repeatable habits and the trust that earns roles, innings, and opportunities.

We also go straight at excuses. Umpires, weather, lineups, and “bad hops” make easy targets, but every excuse hands away your power. Instead, we focus on the controllables: effort, preparation, attitude, and response. You may not control playing time, but you own how you train when your name isn’t called. You can’t erase mistakes, but you decide whether they define you or sharpen you. High school is where these patterns form, and college coaches can spot the difference between accountability and blame from a mile away.

Finally, we unpack what coachability really means. It isn’t silence or people-pleasing; it’s openness to instruction and the humility to apply feedback when it stings. Selective learners only accept coaching that feels good—and they plateau. The players who last hear a correction, say “Got it, coach,” and go right back to work. We close with a clear standard you can use today: be consistent when it’s boring, take ownership when it’s hard, and stay coachable when pride gets loud. Do these long enough and the results take care of themselves—on the field and in life.

If this hits home, subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a teammate who’s ready to own their development.

This is Baseball Coaches Unplugged, and I'm Coach Ken Carpenter.

00:00:11.759 --> 00:00:15.359
Most high school baseball players don't fail because they lack talent.

00:00:15.519 --> 00:00:22.079

00:00:22.239 --> 00:00:29.920
And today I'm going to show you exactly how mastering those three habits can separate you from everyone else in your program.

00:02:40.879 --> 00:02:45.199
Now to today's show on consistency.

00:02:46.479 --> 00:02:49.039
Everybody wants to be good at baseball.

00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:51.199
A lot want to be great.

00:02:51.439 --> 00:03:01.520
Some of you talk about playing at the next level, but very few people are honest about what that actually requires, especially when nobody's watching.

00:03:01.840 --> 00:03:11.439
Consistency is the separator, not talent, not size, not the exit vila you hit once in a showcase three summers ago.

00:03:11.599 --> 00:03:12.960
It's consistency.

00:03:13.520 --> 00:03:17.360
Consistency is doing the small things the same way.

00:03:17.599 --> 00:03:19.919
Every day, whether you feel great or not.

00:03:20.159 --> 00:03:27.759
It's showing up with the same focus on a Tuesday practice in March as you do under the lights on Friday night.

00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:30.560
It's running out running out every ground ball.

00:03:30.800 --> 00:03:37.840
Even when you're oh for your last 12, it's throwing your bullpen with intent, not just checking a box.

00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:40.560
And here's the truth consistency is boring.

00:03:40.639 --> 00:03:41.759
It's repetitive.

00:03:41.919 --> 00:03:44.000
It doesn't give you instant results.

00:03:44.159 --> 00:03:46.800
But baseball doesn't reward excitement.

00:03:46.960 --> 00:03:49.360
It rewards reliability.

00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:51.919
Coaches trust players they can count on.

00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:56.400
Teammates believe in players who show up the same way every day.

00:03:56.560 --> 00:04:00.400
And at the next level, consistency isn't a bonus.

00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:02.879
It's a minimum requirement.

00:04:03.120 --> 00:04:04.879
Now let's talk about excuses.

00:04:05.199 --> 00:04:06.240
Excuses are easy.

00:04:06.319 --> 00:04:08.639
They're comfortable and they're everywhere.

00:04:08.879 --> 00:04:20.160
The umpire, the weather, the field, the lineup, the coach, your position, your role on the team, your last at bat, or even your lack of opportunities.

00:04:20.480 --> 00:04:22.079
Here's the problem with excuses.

00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:25.759
Every time you make one, you give your power away.

00:04:25.920 --> 00:04:29.519
You're saying, I can't control this, so I'm off the hook.

00:04:29.839 --> 00:04:35.040
But the best players I've ever been around don't waste energy on what they can't control.

00:04:35.519 --> 00:04:37.600
They lock in on what they can.

00:04:38.079 --> 00:04:42.879
That's effort, preparation, attitude, and response.

00:04:43.600 --> 00:04:48.959
You don't control playing time, but you control how hard you work when your name isn't called.

00:04:49.279 --> 00:04:56.399
You don't control bad hops, but you can control whether you take the next pitch with confidence or fear.

00:04:56.639 --> 00:05:02.319
You don't control mistakes, but you control whether they define you or sharpen you.

00:05:02.800 --> 00:05:06.000
High school baseball is where habits are formed.

00:05:06.240 --> 00:05:12.079
If you built the habit of making excuses now, it doesn't magically disappear later.

00:05:12.399 --> 00:05:15.040
College coaches will see through it.

00:05:15.519 --> 00:05:18.639
Pro organizations eliminate it quickly.

00:05:18.959 --> 00:05:23.040
Accountability is a skill, and skills can be trained.

00:05:23.439 --> 00:05:29.680
Let's talk about being coachable, because this one matters more than most of you realize.

00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:38.000
Being coachable does not mean being quiet, it does not mean never asking questions, and it definitely doesn't mean being perfect.

00:05:38.240 --> 00:05:40.800
Being coachable means you're open.

00:05:41.040 --> 00:05:47.680
Open to instruction, open to feedback, open to correction, even when it stings a little.

00:05:48.240 --> 00:05:54.560
Every player says they want feedback, but very few players actually handle it well.

00:05:55.519 --> 00:05:57.120
Here's the hard truth.

00:05:57.360 --> 00:06:01.040
If you only accept coaching when it feels good, you're not coachable.

00:06:01.199 --> 00:06:02.319
You're selective.

00:06:02.560 --> 00:06:07.279
And selective learners don't improve as fast as they think they do.

00:06:07.759 --> 00:06:12.560
When a coach corrects you, it's not personal, it's investment.

00:06:12.959 --> 00:06:15.839
Time is the most valuable thing a coach has.

00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:21.920
And if they're spending it on you, that means they see something worth developing.

00:06:22.800 --> 00:06:31.040
I had a coach one time tell me, the minute someone stops talking to you as far as the coach goes, then you know you're in trouble.

00:06:31.279 --> 00:06:36.639
Your job isn't to defend yourself, your job isn't to explain why it happened.

00:06:36.879 --> 00:06:40.720
Your job is to listen, apply, and move forward.

00:06:41.600 --> 00:06:47.519
The great players who last in this game, the ones who say, Gotta coach, and then go right back to work.

00:06:47.759 --> 00:06:58.560
Not the ones who roll their eyes, not the ones who shut down, not the ones who think they already know enough, not the ones that go home and complain to their parents.

00:06:59.439 --> 00:07:05.600
And let me say this clearly: talent without coachability definitely has an expiration date.

00:07:05.839 --> 00:07:10.240
High school baseball is not about being finished, it's about being multiple.

00:07:10.959 --> 00:07:13.439
So if I had to boil it down, here's the standard.

00:07:13.600 --> 00:07:15.839
Be consistent when it's boring.

00:07:16.480 --> 00:07:22.160
Take ownership when it's hard, stay coachable when your pride wants to talk.

00:07:22.800 --> 00:07:32.160
You don't have to be perfect, you don't have to be the best player on the field today, but you do have to be dependable, accountable, and willing to learn.

00:07:32.399 --> 00:07:34.079
That's how trust is built.

00:07:34.319 --> 00:07:38.720
That's how roles are earned, and that's how opportunities come.

00:07:40.160 --> 00:07:46.319
And more importantly, that's how you become the kind of teammate and player people want to go to battle with.

00:07:46.639 --> 00:07:54.560
Not only on your high school team, but later in life when it comes to getting a job and starting a career.

00:07:54.720 --> 00:07:56.160
Handle the basics.

00:07:56.399 --> 00:08:07.519
Control what you can, stay humble enough to be coached, and if you do those things long enough, the results will definitely take care of themselves.

00:08:07.839 --> 00:08:13.759
Baseball Coaches Unplugged is powered by the Netting Professionals Improving Programs one facility at a time.

00:08:13.920 --> 00:08:22.800

00:08:23.279 --> 00:08:30.319
Be sure to tune in every Wednesday for a brand new show as I sit down with some of the best baseball coaches from across the country.

00:08:30.560 --> 00:08:32.799
As always, I'm your host, Coach Ken Carpenter.

00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:36.080
Thanks for listening to Baseball Coaches Unplugged.
