What does it take to build a high school baseball powerhouse ranked #1 in Arkansas and among the top 25 programs nationally? Coach Leighton Hardin of Conway High School pulls back the curtain on his championship formula.

The secret to Conway's "Wampus Cats" success starts with three non-negotiable values: team, toughness, and competitiveness. Coach Hardin demonstrates how following legendary coaches throughout his career prepared him to establish his own winning culture while respecting program traditions.

You'll discover Conway's innovative practice approach, including their game-changing pregame throwing routine that ensures players are mentally and physically ready from the first pitch. Hardin explains why practicing above game speed prepares his team for any situation they'll face in competition.

Perhaps most fascinating is how Conway adapted when faced with physical limitations. Without power hitters throughout the lineup, Harden implemented a specialized pitching strategy and small-ball approach that led to a state championship with an undersized team. His emphasis on two-strike hitting and situational baseball provides a masterclass in maximizing team strengths.

The mental side of baseball receives special attention as Coach Hardin shares his refreshing perspective on failure: "There was one perfect human that lived. It was about 2,000 years ago and that's none of us." This honest approach creates an environment where players develop resilience rather than fear of mistakes.

Beyond the diamond, Harden reveals his ultimate goal of developing "productive members of society, great husbands, great fathers" – demonstrating why Conway's success transcends wins and losses. Whether you coach baseball or simply appreciate leadership excellence, this conversation delivers practical wisdom you can apply immediately.

I'm your host, butch cadden carpenter, and joining me today is layton harden, head baseball coach at conway high school in arkansas and currently ranked number one in the state and top 25 in the nation Coach, thanks for taking time to be on Baseball.

00:03:06.931 --> 00:03:08.093
Coaches Unplugged.

00:03:08.093 --> 00:03:13.568
We appreciate it, glad to be here and glad to share whatever we can to help out the coaches around the nation.

00:03:15.441 --> 00:03:20.240
Well, I always got to start off the podcast with a question.

00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:24.131
It just drives me crazy and I was trying to figure it out.

00:03:24.131 --> 00:03:29.842
I've never heard of your mascot before.

00:03:29.842 --> 00:03:30.043
What?

00:03:30.043 --> 00:03:31.847
What is a wampus cat?

00:03:32.247 --> 00:03:34.331
so there are only four wampus cats in the nation.

00:03:34.331 --> 00:03:35.259
Uh, we're one of them.

00:03:35.259 --> 00:03:37.064
A wampus cat has six legs.

00:03:37.064 --> 00:03:41.037
Uh, the story is for running as fast as light.

00:03:41.037 --> 00:03:42.842
Two are for fighting with all its might.

00:03:42.842 --> 00:03:52.472
So it's a six-legged cat that uh runs fast and fights with its other two legs oh, okay, wow, that's, that's the first.

00:03:52.632 --> 00:03:55.864
That's the first on the show very very unique.

00:03:55.864 --> 00:04:00.632
Well, you followed a legend and you you had.

00:04:00.632 --> 00:04:12.111
You got started off and had a really good career going, and you followed a legend to come to Conway and pretty much you've had no problem continuing the winning ways.

00:04:12.111 --> 00:04:16.127
Every great coach has a foundation.

00:04:16.127 --> 00:04:20.230
What are the core values you build your team around there at Conway?

00:04:21.540 --> 00:04:25.932
So for us as a program, we build it around team toughness and competitiveness.

00:04:25.932 --> 00:04:32.452
So everything we do, whether it's workouts in the weight room, practice, those are the three values we're going to instill in kids.

00:04:32.452 --> 00:04:36.711
Every lesson we go to goes back to those three values.

00:04:36.711 --> 00:04:39.002
You know you talk about following a legend.

00:04:39.002 --> 00:04:47.314
Coach Boucher did a fantastic job of setting things up here at Conway for me to be successful after I followed him, but also for his success while he was here.

00:04:47.314 --> 00:04:57.464
You know, before I came here I followed another legend at Lakeside and coach Tommy White, and then before that I was at Malvern, followed a legend who was there that started the program, darrell Baker.

00:04:57.526 --> 00:05:00.560
So it wasn't something that was kind of new to me.

00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:01.802
You know it's the third time.

00:05:01.802 --> 00:05:10.315
Being able to do that and having that experience, kind of you know, really helped coming into this situation where you know the people here are really good too.

00:05:10.315 --> 00:05:12.124
They didn't expect me to be coach voucher.

00:05:12.124 --> 00:05:15.091
They knew I was going to be myself, whatever that brought.

00:05:15.091 --> 00:05:19.641
So there was no expectation of, hey, we're following this guy, you got to do the same things it was.

00:05:19.641 --> 00:05:21.105
You know, this is your program.

00:05:21.146 --> 00:05:30.702
Now Bring in whatever it is you do and we've done that and you know it's been successful so far.

00:05:30.702 --> 00:05:31.803
Well, I, you know I got it.

00:05:31.803 --> 00:05:41.630
I followed a legend when I was a coach at Buckeye Valley and you know as great as the community was about letting me step in and do my thing.

00:05:41.630 --> 00:05:48.175
There still is that little bit of added pressure there, knowing what the guy ahead of you had done.

00:05:48.656 --> 00:05:49.877
There is, but you've got to control it.

00:05:49.877 --> 00:05:54.802
I mean, you can only control what you control and that's the program the way you know how to run it.

00:05:54.802 --> 00:05:59.713
Obviously, coach Boucher had a lot of success here, won a lot of conference championships, two state championships.

00:05:59.713 --> 00:06:06.872
But at the end of the day, you have to be true to yourself, be who you are and run the program the way you know how, and that's what we had to do when we got here.

00:06:08.800 --> 00:06:10.588
Well, take me inside your practices here.

00:06:10.588 --> 00:06:17.550
What is one thing that separates your practices from the average high school baseball program out there?

00:06:18.321 --> 00:06:23.622
You know, I don't know that I would say anything really separates it, but we're going to do everything full bore.

00:06:23.622 --> 00:06:34.189
You know one of the things that we kind of have a unique warm-up when we go to games that we've got a throwing progression we go through which is really you know it's a timed catch play through that.

00:06:34.189 --> 00:06:50.134
You know, once they get done with a round they're going to have to get tires and throw it to the fence and run back and then they go back through the catch play and they've got it timed and you know everything's going to be timed and we got to play at game speed or higher.

00:06:50.134 --> 00:06:51.283
That way when we get into the game you know there's nothing that's going to surprise us.

00:06:51.283 --> 00:06:51.682
Same thing with hitting.

00:06:51.596 --> 00:06:57.100
We'll go off machine work and we'll see better than whatever pitcher we're going to face, whatever we think that is, or whatever scouting or we have on that pitcher.

00:06:57.100 --> 00:07:06.889
So if he's a guy that's 85, 88 with you know a little sink, we'll 85-88 with you know a little sink, we'll set the machine to 90-92 with a little sink, with whatever off-speed goes with that.

00:07:06.889 --> 00:07:10.351
So you know, just practicing above game speed I think is a big thing for our guys.

00:07:10.351 --> 00:07:11.812
The other part of that.

00:07:11.812 --> 00:07:22.103
Just going back to our values with team, you know our guys get along really well and they work really well together and they know their job at the end of the day is to find a way to win.

00:07:22.103 --> 00:07:27.254
You know your job may be to pinch run today, it may be just to come in and go in a relief roll fifth or sixth inning.

00:07:27.254 --> 00:07:32.889
Whatever it is, we're going to work together and find a way to win and our guys buy into that and do a really good job of working together.

00:07:35.321 --> 00:07:35.901
If I could.

00:07:35.901 --> 00:07:41.353
I'm really intrigued by what you said about your pregame throwing.

00:07:41.353 --> 00:07:42.862
Could you kind of?

00:07:42.862 --> 00:07:44.225
Is it something?

00:07:44.225 --> 00:07:46.529
You can explain the steps?

00:07:46.569 --> 00:07:46.850
to it.

00:07:46.850 --> 00:07:47.612
We can try.

00:07:47.612 --> 00:07:48.966
So we'll start.

00:07:48.966 --> 00:07:52.687
We get three mans in a line, so we'll have six guys throwing together.

00:07:52.687 --> 00:07:55.848
First thing they have to do is make 20 rundown throws.

00:07:55.848 --> 00:08:00.846
After they do that, they transition into what we call 20 running throws, which is just kind of a momentum throw.

00:08:00.846 --> 00:08:04.810
So they'll switch lines as they're doing the rundowns and the running throws.

00:08:04.810 --> 00:08:09.627
From there we'll just go quick, catch 20 throws and after you make a throw you go to the end of your line.

00:08:09.627 --> 00:08:12.026
Then we'll go what we call soft toss throws.

00:08:12.026 --> 00:08:19.322
Where I catch and it's really just a double play feed We'll double play feed to a guy we're trying to catch with the top of our hands.

00:08:19.322 --> 00:08:23.504
Stay on top of the ball, small circles, get the ball out quick to a partner down there.

00:08:23.504 --> 00:08:27.949
He catches it, soft toss throw to the other guy and then they have to make 20 throws with that.

00:08:27.949 --> 00:08:34.335
Then we'll flip it where they go Soft toss throws the other direction, and so that's 80 total throws in your group.

00:08:34.335 --> 00:08:36.476
Get on the tire, throw it down back.

00:08:39.225 --> 00:08:40.558
You've got eight minutes to go through that three times.

00:08:40.558 --> 00:08:41.421
Wow, I love that.

00:08:41.421 --> 00:08:41.760
That's.

00:08:41.760 --> 00:08:46.131
If you're not ready by that time, then you're never going to be ready.

00:08:47.422 --> 00:08:49.124
We had the throwing program that we always did.

00:08:49.124 --> 00:08:49.423
This year.

00:08:49.423 --> 00:08:50.806
We started a little slow in the first inning.

00:08:50.806 --> 00:08:56.011
We would give teams something silly walk a guy, pass ball, and then it's ground ball, ground ball.

00:08:56.011 --> 00:08:57.413
We're down 1-0 all of a sudden.

00:08:57.413 --> 00:09:02.100
So it was just a way to hey, we got to get ready to start the game, and that's kind of what we came up with to get there ready to start the game.

00:09:02.100 --> 00:09:05.625
And that's kind of what we came up with to get there.

00:09:05.645 --> 00:09:16.212
Well, since your arrival there at Conway, can you share a moment that defines what your program's all about.

00:09:16.212 --> 00:09:18.967
So that second year we won a state championship and it was with.

00:09:18.967 --> 00:09:24.830
You know, really talent-wise we were just mid-level in the state here, but we had some guys that were really tough and really resilient.

00:09:24.830 --> 00:09:32.389
The first conference game we had that year we lost 2-1 to North Little Rock and it was one of those we realized.

00:09:32.389 --> 00:09:36.115
You know, this isn't going to be a high-level offensive team.

00:09:36.115 --> 00:09:39.264
You know we had 150, 160-pound kids throughout the lineup.

00:09:39.264 --> 00:09:42.589
So we're going to have to find a different way to win With that.

00:09:42.668 --> 00:09:47.274
We knew pitching-wise we probably weren't just going to give the ball to a guy and he's going to be able to go the whole game.

00:09:47.274 --> 00:09:56.010
We came up with a scenario where we would go 2-2-1-2 or 2-2-2-1 with our pitchers because we have some depth on the mound.

00:09:56.010 --> 00:10:02.264
Then it was with our pitchers go get your three outs, go get your six outs, let's hand it off to the next guy.

00:10:02.264 --> 00:10:05.788
That way our guys kind of have a defined role and they know this.

00:10:05.788 --> 00:10:06.668
All right, this is my job.

00:10:06.668 --> 00:10:14.534
I'm going to go do this for the team and for some of those guys, especially now the younger guys that journey is to go through six innings and a game gets really long for them.

00:10:14.895 --> 00:10:16.417
And you know, one thing goes wrong.

00:10:16.417 --> 00:10:22.025
Hey, man, it's the second inning.

00:10:22.025 --> 00:10:23.508
Know, all I've got to do is get out of this inning.

00:10:23.508 --> 00:10:24.590
The next guy's coming in.

00:10:24.590 --> 00:10:28.395
You know, I think that helped with our mentality and built some resilience.

00:10:28.395 --> 00:10:32.966
And then by the end of the year those guys are like, hey, why are you not letting me go more?

00:10:32.966 --> 00:10:34.446
I really want to go the whole game.

00:10:34.446 --> 00:10:37.128
Okay, at that point, there you go, there's the ball, go get it.

00:10:37.128 --> 00:10:39.543
And, you know, completely changed the mindset of.

00:10:42.691 --> 00:10:48.759
So saying that you have 150, 160-pound guys throughout the lineup offensively?

00:10:48.759 --> 00:10:53.365
Were you a small ball kind of team or how did you handle that?

00:10:53.629 --> 00:10:57.376
We had to go into some small ball that year for sure, we definitely ran the bases.

00:10:57.376 --> 00:11:01.671
We had to be a high-level defensive team and that's one of the things I feel like.

00:11:01.671 --> 00:11:04.279
That year we had three short stops on the infield at each spot.

00:11:04.279 --> 00:11:05.595
Outfield was really good.

00:11:05.595 --> 00:11:14.898
If you hit the ball in the air, it really didn't drop, so it was really keep teams from scoring, grind it out, find a way to score two or three runs to win a game, and yeah, that's what they found a way to do.

00:11:16.990 --> 00:11:25.120
Well, what's one thing that you strongly believe in that most coaches might necessarily not agree with?

00:11:29.190 --> 00:11:31.931
Gosh, you know I think there's still the old school approach of building the toughness with the kids there's.

00:11:31.931 --> 00:11:36.859
You know there's a lot of different ways and with travel ball, you know it's a little bit looser game now.

00:11:36.859 --> 00:11:41.160
But you know we're still going to be tight with the group.

00:11:41.160 --> 00:11:42.576
We're going to build a team.

00:11:42.576 --> 00:11:44.116
It's not going to be a bunch of individuals.

00:11:44.116 --> 00:11:52.549
You know, with that offensively, two-strike hitting is huge, I think, at our level, especially if you don't have guys hitting the ball out of the yard.

00:11:52.549 --> 00:12:01.072
If you want to see a good hitter, see what he does with two strikes, if he can handle the ball, manipulate the barrel there to where we're fouling, pitches off and staying at the plate, work the pitcher, get him out of the game.

00:12:01.072 --> 00:12:08.095
That's invaluable to a high school program right now, unless you've got eight, nine guys in the lineup that can hit the ball out of the yard.

00:12:11.390 --> 00:12:19.102
When talking small ball, how much time do you put into the bunt game?

00:12:19.163 --> 00:12:20.311
We do so.

00:12:20.311 --> 00:12:22.138
We'll practice in the mornings at six o'clock.

00:12:22.138 --> 00:12:24.597
We'll go for an hour practice there.

00:12:24.597 --> 00:12:26.758
30 minutes of that is offensive small game.

00:12:26.758 --> 00:12:31.578
From there, the other 30 minutes is usually defensive short game.

00:12:31.578 --> 00:12:34.573
Then the afternoons we go to the field and we put it together as a team on the field.

00:12:34.573 --> 00:12:43.094
You've got about an hour of offensive work every day, or, excuse me, an hour of offensive and defensive work every day with it.

00:12:43.375 --> 00:13:01.154
I saw this the other day, the Tennessee versusanderbilt game, and the guy hits the home run and, uh, you know yelling at the infielders and then you know kind of it's all about me approach.

00:13:01.154 --> 00:13:02.976
I guess what is your take on?

00:13:02.976 --> 00:13:17.690
Uh, on that, as far as guys chirping after they hit a home run at the opposing team and the whole all about me attitude, it sounds like you're more of a team guy and not really into that side of it.

00:13:17.690 --> 00:13:22.842
Yeah, you know, when I came here, that was one of the questions I was asked in the interview, I guess is how do you handle that?

00:13:22.842 --> 00:13:24.631
And really the whole focus needs to be on us.

00:13:24.631 --> 00:13:25.572
This game it's.

00:13:25.572 --> 00:13:29.596
You know there's another team that shows up to play you, but you're playing against yourself.

00:13:29.596 --> 00:13:32.659
So why would we even focus on the other team?

00:13:32.659 --> 00:13:37.244
And I'm not saying there's never been a moment where our team hasn't done that, but you've got to pull them back in.

00:13:37.244 --> 00:13:39.145
You know, this is what we're about.

00:13:39.145 --> 00:13:39.787
We're about us.

00:13:39.787 --> 00:13:41.390
Who cares who the other?

00:13:41.390 --> 00:13:44.214
I mean that's Play the game against, but you're playing against yourself.

00:13:44.214 --> 00:13:46.998
At the end of the day, are you doing what we think is important?

00:13:46.998 --> 00:13:49.500
Are you able to execute the things that we're supposed to execute?

00:13:49.500 --> 00:13:53.525
And if you do more times than not, we're going to be on the right side of the scoreboard at the end of the game.

00:13:58.746 --> 00:13:59.409
So keep it with us.

00:13:59.409 --> 00:14:09.866
Have you had a time where you failed as a coach, where it's like you know I didn't do what I needed to do there, and how did you respond and correct it and turn it into a?

00:14:09.947 --> 00:14:10.128
positive.

00:14:10.128 --> 00:14:10.610
Yeah, absolutely.

00:14:10.610 --> 00:14:11.312
I mean.

00:14:11.312 --> 00:14:18.302
You fail every day and I think your kids need to know that you failed, because they're afraid of failure and they need to know it's okay to fail.

00:14:18.302 --> 00:14:20.397
There was one perfect human that lived.

00:14:20.397 --> 00:14:22.437
It was about 2,000 years ago and that's none of us.

00:14:22.437 --> 00:14:24.772
So it's okay to make mistakes here, you know, and that's none of us.

00:14:24.772 --> 00:14:26.433
So it's okay to make mistakes here, you know, and that's one of the things.

00:14:26.433 --> 00:14:31.458
Sometimes we'll go through machine scrimmage and if they make an error, we'll send them to the fence and back.

00:14:31.458 --> 00:14:35.043
They got to be back to their position in 25 seconds and we'll meet as a group.

00:14:35.043 --> 00:14:37.125
Hey, anybody mad at Johnny for making the error?

00:14:37.125 --> 00:14:38.326
Nope, we're okay.

00:14:38.326 --> 00:14:42.594
We're going to make the next play.

00:14:42.594 --> 00:14:44.616
Okay, go let the guys down.

00:14:44.616 --> 00:14:49.162
Maybe you may feel that way and maybe we had to run the fence for you, but it's okay, we're going to make the next play.

00:14:49.162 --> 00:14:49.663
Let's get over it.

00:14:49.663 --> 00:14:50.423
Go to the next one.

00:14:52.125 --> 00:14:52.686
Makes sense.

00:14:52.686 --> 00:15:13.211
I like that attitude because the mental side of the game is clearly the toughest part of playing baseball and you know how do you get through to the player that's struggling and you know this guy's a really good player for me and he's having a tough time.

00:15:13.211 --> 00:15:15.700
Is there anything you do to try to get through to those guys?

00:15:18.431 --> 00:15:24.220
That's a real individual situation and it's just knowing your kids and being able to connect with them and see what's going on.

00:15:24.220 --> 00:15:28.296
And there could be a multitude of things and what you need to do with them, and it may just be spending time with them.

00:15:28.296 --> 00:15:28.650
You know.

00:15:28.650 --> 00:15:35.318
If it's something going on hitting wise, just spend a little bit of extra time with them in the cage, one-on-one, because you're a good player at the end of the day.

00:15:35.318 --> 00:15:39.054
So if you're a good player, you're going to play good and this may just not be your time.

00:15:39.054 --> 00:15:39.537
That's okay.

00:15:39.537 --> 00:15:48.360
Things we do, you know, we we kind of try to get them to where they're going to be out of their heads.

00:15:48.360 --> 00:15:51.952
With all the work we do, whether it's weight room, the warmup hey, this is what we do and this is the attitude we take to it.

00:15:51.952 --> 00:15:56.813
So staying that same mental focus throughout, whether things are going well or not.

00:15:57.658 --> 00:16:09.697
When your team is good, which it sounds like you guys have been pretty good for for a while how do you keep them humbled and focused on just that next game or the next pitch?

00:16:09.818 --> 00:16:12.928
actually, yeah, gosh, that's hard.

00:16:12.928 --> 00:16:21.438
You know, we went through a win streak this year, lasted for a while, got here towards the end of the year where we really weren't playing very well.

00:16:21.438 --> 00:16:29.274
We lost a game we played well, came back and we were down 5-2, came back, tied it up 5-5 in the seventh, ended up losing 6-5, which you know, I told the kids.

00:16:29.274 --> 00:16:31.934
Proud of you, you were resilient, you found a way to come back.

00:16:31.934 --> 00:16:34.274
We just didn't respond well.

00:16:34.274 --> 00:16:39.538
The game after that we won 16-6, but just didn't play well, real sloppy, not who we were.

00:16:39.538 --> 00:17:19.549
So at that point we had to go get their focus back no-transcript.

00:17:19.630 --> 00:17:38.721
we end up losing like three to one, and all of our mistakes were made defending the button, and so when the game was over, I mean the game literally ended in like an hour 20.

00:17:38.721 --> 00:17:47.670
You know, and I was like we talked about it and then I said let's go back out on the field and let's work through a couple things.

00:17:47.670 --> 00:17:51.955
And I took a ton of heat from parents saying you know, what are you?

00:17:51.955 --> 00:17:52.357
What are you doing?

00:17:52.357 --> 00:17:55.730
You're embarrassing the players because the other team was still, you know, packing up.

00:17:55.730 --> 00:17:58.198
And how do you?

00:17:58.198 --> 00:18:00.545
How do you treat a game when the game's over?

00:18:00.545 --> 00:18:07.122
Do you talk to them afterwards or do you like give it 24 hours and then address it that way?

00:18:09.411 --> 00:18:16.134
We'll meet and talk a little bit and there's usually not a lot that says, you know, hitting on a couple of points and we get out of there in five minutes.

00:18:16.134 --> 00:18:22.016
And if it's not a well-played game, you want to let it set in and just say am I overreacting right here, emotionally or not?

00:18:22.016 --> 00:18:27.682
In that instance, when we took them over the weight room, no, it was sloppy play and we're going to take care of that right then.

00:18:27.682 --> 00:18:34.617
And you know, to go to your point on parents, that's a tough one nowadays.

00:18:34.617 --> 00:18:37.384
I'm lucky I'm in a spot where we have a lot of parental support.

00:18:37.384 --> 00:18:39.089
They approve of everything we do.

00:18:39.089 --> 00:18:50.978
They know what we're trying to accomplish with the kids and they see it with all the things we do outside of baseball, with our program to try to build the kid and make him to where he's going to be a productive member of society, a great husband, great father.

00:18:50.978 --> 00:19:04.045
So at the end of the day, that's the end goal and if it takes us, we got to go do this after the game and that's just what we've got to do Hate losing or love winning, hate losing.

00:19:07.272 --> 00:19:15.192
You know, I don't know exactly why, it's just there's something you didn't do well, the feeling it leaves you now again.

00:19:15.192 --> 00:19:16.805
We talked about we lost that game 6-5.

00:19:16.805 --> 00:19:18.077
I didn't have any issue with that.

00:19:18.077 --> 00:19:19.227
Our guys played well.

00:19:19.227 --> 00:19:21.729
The other team just had to play a perfect game.

00:19:21.729 --> 00:19:23.367
They robbed two home runs.

00:19:23.367 --> 00:19:28.717
I mean, it was just some crazy things happened, wins blowing in with another home run that would have been out.

00:19:28.717 --> 00:19:32.714
It was one of those games where, hey, it just wasn't our day.

00:19:32.714 --> 00:19:35.634
But I'm not a big fan of losing.

00:19:35.634 --> 00:19:37.771
I think there's always a way you can find a way to win.

00:19:38.484 --> 00:19:46.712
Well, I'll put you in a scenario here You're managing an MLB team and I don't know who's your favorite team.

00:19:48.884 --> 00:19:51.654
Gosh, I don't watch a whole lot of MLB anymore, mainly college now.

00:19:51.865 --> 00:19:53.310
Well, hopefully you'll know these guys.

00:19:53.310 --> 00:19:59.971
Then you get to have these guys on your team and group A or group B.

00:19:59.971 --> 00:20:08.378
The first group is Ronald Acuna Jr, freddie Freeman, hank Aaron and Ted Williams.

00:20:08.378 --> 00:20:18.099
The group B would be Juan Soto, bryce Harper, babe Ruth and Barry Bonds.

00:20:20.925 --> 00:20:23.173
I'll go with group B because I love the lefties in the lineup.

00:20:24.386 --> 00:20:26.073
And you got some guys that can swing it pretty good.

00:20:27.265 --> 00:20:31.671
Yeah, the power lefty is hard to find, so I'll take that guy any day.

00:20:32.746 --> 00:20:38.049
If you could be hired to coach another sport, what would it be and why?

00:20:40.586 --> 00:20:41.570
Oh gosh, I don't know.

00:20:41.570 --> 00:20:44.933
I guess football just because of the competitiveness of it.

00:20:44.933 --> 00:20:51.473
You know it's every Friday night, You've got the lights there, it's really your round now with football too.

00:20:51.473 --> 00:20:58.044
I think football and baseball are similar mentalities that go with them, so I think that would transfer over well to football.

00:20:58.125 --> 00:21:04.553
Well, Arkansas has a great SEC baseball program and their coaches do a great job.

00:21:04.553 --> 00:21:12.794
Do you think that it helps in your state to have a, a powerhouse program like that, that the kids can?

00:21:12.794 --> 00:21:14.286
You know, they, they know.

00:21:14.286 --> 00:21:15.952
Hey, it's right, it's right here in town.

00:21:17.945 --> 00:21:18.788
Yeah, absolutely.

00:21:18.788 --> 00:21:19.432
I mean we've got.

00:21:19.432 --> 00:21:22.025
You know it's the only show in town really in Arkansas.

00:21:22.025 --> 00:21:23.992
Now we've got the university of central Arkansas.

00:21:23.992 --> 00:21:29.557
It's a mile down the road right here too, so that helps a lot also having those guys around.

00:21:29.557 --> 00:21:38.488
But the state of Arkansas really rallies around the Razorbacks and everybody really grows up being a Razorback fan in Arkansas, so it helps.

00:21:38.488 --> 00:21:39.892
We've had a couple go up there.

00:21:40.113 --> 00:22:01.627
We've got one on the team right now committed, so it helps and it creates a little bit of excitement throughout the state really and it makes the state better high school wise yeah, well, actually I want to throw one more question at you, with, you know, winning state titles and and uh, being nationally ranked the way I, that's how I came about finding you.

00:22:01.627 --> 00:22:07.978
How does that, uh, how do the players handle that type of attention?

00:22:09.259 --> 00:22:09.900
I'm going to be honest.

00:22:09.900 --> 00:22:15.553
You know, coming here I felt like that was kind of an expectation in my mind of where I thought this place could get to.

00:22:15.553 --> 00:22:20.036
I left a school that would graduate, you know, 250 kids in a year.

00:22:20.036 --> 00:22:24.655
And so what I did there, you know we graduate 750 a year here.

00:22:24.655 --> 00:22:26.771
So that's three times the amount of kids.

00:22:27.405 --> 00:22:32.833
So my last year there at Lakeside I just wrote down our lineup, wrote it down a second time, wrote it down a third time.

00:22:32.833 --> 00:22:37.232
I was like there's your varsity team and I look at them like holy cow.

00:22:37.232 --> 00:22:42.969
You know we had eight guys who were going to college that year to play college baseball from that team at Lakeside.

00:22:42.969 --> 00:22:46.676
I was like you got 24 kids on this roster that are about to be able to go play somewhere.

00:22:46.676 --> 00:22:48.990
It's like it won't ever get to that point.

00:22:48.990 --> 00:22:51.290
Well, I think we finally got into that point.

00:22:51.290 --> 00:22:54.994
So you know, in my mind coming here, that was kind of a okay, that's a goal I have.

00:22:54.994 --> 00:23:00.768
Can we get on the national stage and possibly get ranked nationally throughout this year?

00:23:00.768 --> 00:23:02.170
We're going through.

00:23:02.170 --> 00:23:03.752
We haven't lost a game for a while.

00:23:03.833 --> 00:23:05.756
I could feel kind of that cloud of pressure on the kids.

00:23:05.756 --> 00:23:09.019
It was a lot to go through because we're really still pretty young.

00:23:09.019 --> 00:23:12.535
We only start two seniors, most of the time heavy with our junior class.

00:23:12.535 --> 00:23:15.305
So we're going through and we're perfect.

00:23:15.305 --> 00:23:21.575
You just kind of feel that cloud of being perfect way on them and once we lost that one it kind of felt like it went away.

00:23:21.575 --> 00:23:24.876
But you know it's just tough to manage.

00:23:24.876 --> 00:23:28.220
You want to get to that point where you can be perfect, but that's hard to do.

00:23:28.220 --> 00:23:29.840
It's really hard to do in this game.

00:23:29.840 --> 00:23:37.885
There's so many good coaches, so many good teams that being able to go through a season without a blemish is really tough.

00:23:37.885 --> 00:23:40.891
But I told the kids after that game I'm so proud of you.

00:23:40.891 --> 00:23:41.811
Where you came from, I don't care.

00:23:41.811 --> 00:23:42.452
We lost this game.

00:23:42.452 --> 00:23:45.657
I'm so proud of where we're at right now and there's still a lot to be accomplished.

00:23:45.898 --> 00:23:51.409
So Well, it's Leighton Harden, head coach at Conway High School in Arkansas.
